Sigmund Freud: Applications Outside of Psychology Class

"Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways."  - Sigmund Freud I found this quote by Freud and I wanted to elaborate on it a bit. Yes, he was a very controversial psychologist and I certainly don't agree with all of his theories, but sometimes there is a very valuable kernel of truth in what he has to say. As a melancholic, I am rather an expert on not expressing my emotions. Or at least, I think I'm an expert. I think that I can hide what I'm feeling like a professional actress. That works great until it doesn't work. Because it doesn't really work at all. You see, we all experience emotions. You can try to bury them, hide them, and repress them. If you are feeling sad, you can put on a happy face. If you are angry, you can still be friendly to someone. Notice what Freud says, though: "They are buried alive..." Yes, buried ALIVE. Buried alive! Meaning, they aren't actually DEAD...

The Start of Winter Quarter 2014

Image
I'm a college student. That status means that this last Monday, the 6th, I started back to school for winter quarter. This quarter I'm taking sociology, psychology, and intro to communication. This combination makes for a pretty heavy load of reading and writing. I'll even be giving some speeches. However, it's my priority right now to be a student and graduate with my AA degree this summer. If that means hard work, then hard work is what I will be doing, willingly. Sociology is something that I'm finding very interesting so far. Of course, I don't agree with all the viewpoints and ideas presented, but it is still intriguing to me to think about why we are who we are and how society plays a role in that identity. Your gender, race, and class all play a role in the person that you are today. Society has a set of norms to follow, and they pretty much dictate how people act on a day-to-day basis. I think that sometimes, though, people can tend to act like a v...

Happy New Year!

Image
Happy New Year to you all! 2013 was a very interesting year for me. I tried a lot of new things and definitely got out of my comfort zone more than ever before. In 2014, I'm looking forward to more new experiences and spontaneity. In retrospect, my two new year's resolutions for last year were about halfway successful. I didn't read many classics, but my exercise routine was established and I am very happy with it. For my spiritual life, I resolve to go to confession once a month. And now for a quick update on my health. I am 22 years old and I just had chickenpox. I am recovered now, but I still have some scabs that are waiting to fall off. That was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life. I was so itchy that I couldn't sleep. I don't need to mention that being covered with scabs is a very humbling experience when going out in public. I'm glad that I got it over with, but getting this virus in your twenties is no picnic. I was vaccinated for i...

Advent 2013: What's coming up on December 1st

Let's take a look at the second reading that we will hear on December 1st, the first Sunday in Advent. Romans 13:11 "Brothers and sisters: You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and lust, not in rivalry and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh." What I get from this is that Christ is going to come again, and we have to be ready. We don't know when He will come for the second time, but we have to be alert and watchful. You have to behave and do what God wants you to do. Do not indulge in sinfulness, but in holiness and good works. Let's take a look at some practical ways in which we can prac...

Either way, all attention should be on your eyes, so don't let another feature upstage them. What You'll Need All it takes is 10 minutes and five "ingredients" to get this look. You'll need 1 tube eyeshadow primer, 1 metallic eye shadow, 1 cream cheek color and black mascara and neutral lipgloss for garnish. Try Cover Girl Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Gold; $5, at drugstores Step 1 Prime your lids. Metallics can get crepey quickly, but a good base coat will help keep the color smooth. Try Too Faced Shadow Insurance. Step 2 Swipe on your shadow -- and for more drama at night, dampen your fingertip or brush first. But if you're using a cream shadow skip the add...

Long Time No See!

Image
I want to apologize for being absent for so long. My computer at home makes it very difficult to create new posts because of computer issues. I'll solve that problem by either one at the library or using the school's connection with my own laptop. I miss blogging. So basically this will be a catch-up post. I've had so many things on my mind and no way to let you all know about them! Sad day. Okay, moving on. It is now November, and Thanksgiving will be coming upon us pretty quick here. Notice that Thanksgiving hasn't happened yet. I point that out to you to comment on the holiday season. It is only November 14th. Advent, the preparation period for the Christmas season, hasn't even come upon us. So if you're already celebrating Christmas by playing Christmas music, having Christmas decorations up, or other traditions that belong to that season, how about putting that on hold? Please don't shop on Thanksgiving. I'm not going to. If you are shopping...
