Lyrics Dissection Monday: Dear Future Husband by Meghan Trainor

Dear future husband,
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life

THE BREAKDOWN:

This is good. This woman knows the basic principle that all women find out (or should) sooner or later: guys need directions sometimes. They desperately want you to tell them what you need. They can't read your mind ladies!

(Awwwww)
Take me on a date
I deserve it, babe
And don't forget the flowers every anniversary
'Cause if you'll treat me right
I'll be the perfect wife
Buying groceries
Buy-buying what you need

THE BREAKDOWN:

Dates are good.
She deserves it, yes, just as much as he does.
Here she's letting him know that her love language is gifts. Now he knows, good.
There's no such thing as the perfect wife in reality. Unless buying groceries makes you one, of course.

You got that 9 to 5
But, baby, so do I
So don't be thinking I'll be home and baking apple pies
I never learned to cook
But I can write a hook
Sing along with me
Sing-sing along with me (hey)

THE BREAKDOWN:

She's stating a reality that's current: most couples both have jobs.
Despite the vintage-sounding beginning, she won't be a homemaker (but she'll buy the groceries!)
She won't be able to cook anything with those groceries, but she can write good sentences!

CHORUS:

You gotta know how to treat me like a lady
Even when I'm acting crazy
Tell me everything's alright

THE BREAKDOWN:

Yes he should treat her like a lady (hopefully his mom taught him that) and she should also treat him like the man that he is!
Everyone acts crazy sometimes but if she's acting like that, hopefully he won't just tell her everything is all right. That sounds comforting but if it were me, I would want someone who is going to bring me down to earth.

(Awwwww)
Dear future husband,
Here's a few things you'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life
Dear future husband,
If you wanna get that special lovin'
Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night

THE BREAKDOWN:

I'm sorry but she sounds very insecure. Her husband should tell her that she's beautiful, but to need that as validation every night in order for her to love him in return is just too much.

After every fight
Just apologize
And maybe then I'll let you try and rock my body right
Even if I was wrong
[Laugh] You know I'm never wrong
Why disagree?
Why, why disagree?

THE BREAKDOWN:

I think that she needs to apologize too if she does something wrong.
I know she's kidding about never being wrong. I've certainly said that countless times. My parents gave me a magnet that says "I have my faults but being wrong is not one of them."

(CHORUS IS REPEATED)

Dear future husband,
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life (hey, baby)
Dear future husband,
Make time for me
Don't leave me lonely
And know we'll never see your family more than mine

THE BREAKDOWN:

Is she suggesting that if he doesn't do exactly what she wants, she'll divorce him? I am afraid so.
Couples need to make time for each other. It's not one-sided! She honestly has said nothing about what she'll do for him in this whole song yet except that she'll buy the groceries! Ridiculous!
She's setting herself up for some disappointment. They should make the effort to see both sides of the family, and various factors can come into play on quantity.

I'll be sleeping on the left side of the bed (hey)
Open doors for me and you might get some kisses
Don't have a dirty mind
Just be a classy guy
Buy me a ring
Buy-buy me a ring, (babe)

THE BREAKDOWN:

This is my favorite part of the whole song.
She certainly has positive reinforcement down as a concept.
I agree with her on the dirty mind part! I can't stand it when guys (or girls) have their minds in the gutter and then vocalize it! Drives me crazy!
Classy, yes yes yes!
A ring is important if you're going to get married. Shows the world you're taken and is a reminder of the lifelong commitment you're making.

(CHORUS IS REPEATED)

(more repetition)

(That's right!)

Oh-woah

Future husband, better love me right

THE BREAKDOWN:

All I have to say is, she better love him right too.
